Housebreaking a Mini Schnauzer???

I've been having some trouble housebreaking my 10 mo. old mini schnauzer. He had some serious health issues when he was a puppy, he was hospitalized due to an ear infection he acquired soon after being born (the vet suggested) and I think that probably had something to do with it. He sort of "unlearned" a few things he'd gotten down already. What can I do to make sure he doesn't "go" inside the house??? He especially does it when he's left alone. Also if you have any tricks to teach him to verbalize when he needs to go, it'd be great! --- I'm usually with him for most part of the day.
