Why are so many factually correct answers on R&S given large numbers of thumbs-down votes?

Yes, some questions involve very subjective topics and therefore the answers are equally subjective (and/or downright hostile). But I find it amazing that even the most objective types of information-seeking questions lead to insightful and factually-correct answers which nevertheless get lots of thumbs-down votes (and perhaps even NO thumbs-up votes.) WHY THE IRRATIONAL VOTES? Ignorance? Hostility towards people who DO know the answer? Why?
